Executive Search is not just a job, it’s a career

Executive Search is not simply a sales job, it requires finely tuned skills to develop and nurture key relationships. There is a structured career path, and those who are most successful are able to move into a managing consultant role or beyond. In fact, some of our Directors have moved up the career ladder from Recruitment Consultant very quickly. At Marks Sattin, every employee has a comprehensive career development plan to ensure they learn, improve and become successful.

Autonomous – you manage your day

Executive Search offers the flexibility and variety to manage your day to achieve the best outcomes. From interviewing candidates, to meeting with clients, analysing new trends and writing job adverts, every day you are interacting with new people. You will be stretched and challenged, but supported every step of the way. You will gain a great sense of job satisfaction from managing your own workload and managing your own desk. Marks Sattin's specialist model means that you will become an expert in the niche you operate in, you will be the go-to person for your clients and candidates, building yourself a reputation as a thought-leader in the industry and ultimately, becoming a trusted partner for your customers.

Energetic, fun, driven, supportive...these are just some of the adjectives that describe our culture. Executive search is known for the dynamic and interesting people it attracts and the social aspect is second to none.

Every day is different. But one thing remains the same – the opportunity to develop and nurture key relationships with a variety to stakeholders, both internal and external, throughout the day.

Recruitment Consultant

In a nutshell, executive search consultants are the conduit between clients (employers that are hiring) and candidates (job seekers). Whilst at its core, it is a sales-related job, executive search offers a lot of benefits that other sales jobs do not.

You will undertake business development – winning new business, getting to know clients - their business and Executive Search needs. Sometimes that means they just want to recruit one role, other times it’s a large scale executive search project. You advise, you assist and you create a strategy for finding them their next employee.

A large part of the day will be spent talking to job seekers. These may be passive (not currently looking for a job) or they may be actively job hunting. Or it may be screening applicants from a job you’ve advertised on social media or the internet. You’ll be required to interview them, match them against the client’s requirements and liaise with the client on why you feel they are a good match. You will provide a shortlist to the client and provide your expertise in negotiating salary and rate.

You may need to present to clients on market trends or provide career advice to job seekers. The support you receive from your manager, your team and the infrastructure teams will ensure you have all the tools you need to succeed.

Attitude, attitude, attitude! The most important attribute you can have is a good positive attitude; you need to be willing to learn and motivated to succeed.

successful consultant

Typically your career in executive search begins in a resourcer or candidate management role working alongside a consultant. This enables you as a trainee to gain valuable on the job experience initially focusing on the sourcing of candidates (job seekers). You undergo a comprehensive training and development programme and depending on the skills you display, can quickly progress to a billing consultant role within 12 months.
